Flexibility In Working With Wireless Laptop Internet Service

I was, once upon a time, a worker in a cubicle factory, much the same as the now-famous cartoon by Scott Adams. Forcing myself into someone else's schedule and being tied to a desktop computer was nothing if not stifling. I currently work anywhere I want to that has wifi access, with my wireless laptop Internet service.

How does this work? Simple. I have a tiny little modem, not much bigger than a flash drive (or data stick..or as my friend Mike calls it, 'nerd jewelry'), that plugs right into the one of the several USB ports on my laptop. This gives me wireless broadband Internet access with high speed downloads and uploads.

I was asked recently if I would ever go back to working in an office, in the same line of work I used to do (transcription). I didn't even have to stop to think about it - the answer was an unequivocal NO! I still do transcription, mind you, but now I work at home or the library, in my car, in an airport - wherever I have my wireless laptop Internet modem.

I can work at home in my jammies if I don't feel like getting all dressed up, office style. If I know I have a heavy workload and nowhere else to go all day, I can be as sloppy as I want (and be as COMFORTABLE as I want as well!) without compromising my productivity. In fact, with my wireless laptop Internet, I am if anything more productive than ever, because I can work anywhere that I can get a wireless Internet signal.

I remember thinking, when I first began working in the mid 1970s, that I had a long stretch of mind-numbing tedium ahead of me, working in offices for my whole career. My background is clerical, so typically I did office assistant tasks and transcription, filing, and so forth. My schedule was not my own - and I assure you that I am so NOT a morning person!

Nowadays if I have a project that I need absolute quiet to get finished, I can work in the middle of the night, as I did last night. It is amazing how silent my house gets and how little interference there is at 1 AM. I was working merrily away, finishing a project with my wireless laptop Internet standing ready to transmit my work.
